Swati is a non-profit, non-governmental organization registered under the act of the Chief District Office and Social Welfare Council (Nepal Government). Swati was established in January 2002 and since then Swati has been enormously involved in women’s empowerment activities.
With the goal of achieving women’s empowerment through economic independence, Swati addresses unemployment issues among women from disadvantaged groups and provides various kinds of skills\ and training to make them able to generate income. Likewise, Swati implements development programs to uplift the status of women in rural as well as urban areas. Furthermore, Swati conducts research and awareness-raising programs on women-related issues.
Swati is the first organization in Nepal that provided driving training for underprivileged groups of women to become professional drivers. In 2003 with the support of Global Fund For Women USA, Swati conducted various levels of driving training and self-defense course for 100 women, among them 60% of women are working as professional drivers in United Nations and International and National NGOs in Nepal. Remaining are working as private driver for the families. Swati has set an example of creating new avenues for women by
by producing Lady Drivers globally and this concept was adopted in other countries such as Kenya and India and women are running cab service. Unfortunately in Nepal due to political crisis, Swati was unable to raise fund and actualize the concept. Now Swati with its new executive and team members are working hard on establishing a Cab service run by women. Swati has its network in six districts of Nepal where it works with women from underprivileged group. Issues and challenges faced by women in their community include lack of economic independence, early marriage violence against women, and other problems associated with patriarchal societies. Swati addresses these issues by advocating for the rights of women. Outside of this, Swati addresses the issue of women’s economic independence by providing women with skills training and employment opportunities. Equipping women with a skill that can be used to generate an income is seen as one of the most promising ways to empower women. Further to this, women’s establishing their own businesses is an ultimate source of income.
Hence Swati has been working on women’s issues including economic independence for 14 years with various donors such as USAID, DFID, SNV, Global Fund for the USA, and Danida Hugou. The core areas of Swati are Economic Empowerment, Sexual and Reproductive Health, Violence Against Women, and Good Governance.
Swati is the first women’s organization that worked directly with CIAA (Commission of Investigation of Abuse of Authority to raise awareness among women’s groups on anti-corruption. In 2003-4 Swati organized various programs with CIAA to involve women in Anti-corruption and good governance with funding support of USAID and ESP-DFID.
